aims
Learn the basic principles of detectors in particle and astroparticle physics and the scope of their application.
requirements
Bachelor in Physics, Basic knowledge of nuclear and
elementary particle physics
structure / topics / contents
Advances in physics have historically been closely related to the improvements in the detection of particles. In this lecture we will give an overview of the different ways particles interact in matter, and how these interactions are used for particle detection. We will discuss examples of current particle detectors. In the exercises we will apply this knowledge to develop a possible detector for a future gamma-ray satellite in simulations.

The covered topics will include:
* Interactions of particles with matter
* Scintillation counters and photon detectors
* Trackers, semiconductors and Cherenkov detectors
* Electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters
* Examples of detectors in particle (e.g. ATLAS and CMS) and astro-particle physics (e.g. the H.E.S.S. or the Fermi gamma-ray telescopes)
