Lern- und Qualifikationsziele
The goal of this course is to provide an introduction to the physics low-dimensional solid state systems, their fascinating properties, and why these provide and are of high interest in science and technology. You will further learn the basics of the primary optical spectroscopy methods to characterize and understand theses systems. This course will prepare you to start anMaster thesis or PhD in a research group that works on low-dimensional materials.

Gliederung / Themen / Inhalte
- Refreshing of solid-state physics basics
- Effects of dimensionality: why are 1D/2D systems interesting in science and applications?
- Introduction to 2D materials such as graphene (metallic), transition metal dichalcogenides (semi-conducting), and hexagonal boron-nitride.
- 2D materials and their heterostructure in science and technology
- Introduction to 1D materials (carbon nanotubes, carbyne) and their physical properties
- Introduction to optical spectroscopy techniques for investigating low-dimensional materials: Photoluminescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy
