Nano and surface science
God made the bulk; the surface was invented by the devil (Wolfgang Pauli)

The emergence of surface science about 70 years ago has enabled to experimentally address and fundamentally develop our understanding of the physical properties of matter at the nano and atomic scale. This achievement is at the heart of modern technology and emergent devices which feature large surface & interface area to bulk ratio.
The aim of this lecture is to provide an overview of the basic concepts and the experimental techniques used in surface science and their application in the context of nanoscience. Notably, we will address the structural and (opto)electronic of surfaces, interfaces and of nano-objects (especially that of the emerging 2D materials and small organic molecules).

Below, the details of the points that will discussed:

Structural properties:
1. Basic crystallographic properties of surfaces
2. Structural properties of surfaces and interface
3. Adsorption and desorption

Optoelectronic properties:
1. Recalling the basics of solid states physics
2. dielectric function and application to spectroscopy
3. Electronic properties of surfaces (surface states)
4. Optoelectronic properties of some low-dimensional systems

Experimental techniques in surface science
1. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED)
2. X-ray- and UV- Photoemission (XPS, UPS)
3. Ultra-high vacuum technologies
